Keep Your WhatsApp Business App and Add an Assistant on the Same Number

Where Meta supports it, an assistant can work on the same number as your WhatsApp Business app. Here is what changes in the app, what information the assistant can receive, and what to check before connecting.

The question behind "let's connect your WhatsApp"

You already use the WhatsApp Business app for customer conversations. Changing the number would mean telling customers where to find you, and leaving the app would change how you work. Before agreeing to connect an assistant, there are two practical questions: Can I keep using my app? And what can the connected system see?

Where Meta offers it for your number, an assistant can work alongside the WhatsApp Business app on the same number. The app stays available, but some features change, and the connected provider receives the messages on that number. Back up your chats and review those changes first.

How we checked: the details below come from Meta's documentation for connecting an existing WhatsApp Business app number to the WhatsApp Business Platform (Meta: onboarding WhatsApp Business app users), checked on 16 October 2026. Meta updates this feature from time to time, so your provider should be able to tell you what applies on the day you connect.

Two ways a number gets connected

Third-party assistants, chatbots and business inboxes connect to WhatsApp through Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, the official connection for business software. (Meta also has its own AI agent, Meta Business Agent, a separate product with its own pricing.) A third-party tool can connect your number in one of two ways:

  1. The number moves to the platform. It's registered to the system, and nobody uses it in a phone app anymore. This is the usual setup for a team inbox on a separate number. If you move your existing number like this, it stops working in the app on your phone.
  2. Your WhatsApp Business app number is connected as it is. You keep using the app on your phone, and the system works on the same number alongside you. Vendors often call this "coexistence".

For an owner who wants to keep answering from a phone, the second option is worth checking first. The rest of this guide is about it.

What stays the same, and what changes

Stays the same
Your phone number The number your customers already have
The app on your phone Keeps working. You read and answer every one-to-one chat as before
Messages you type in the app Still free. Meta's charges apply only to what the connected system sends (what WhatsApp charges since October 2026)
Calls, catalog, Status, business profile, Channels Unchanged, in the app
Changes
Broadcast lists You can't create new ones, and existing lists become read-only
Disappearing messages, view-once and live location Turned off in all one-to-one chats, personal ones included
Group chats Keep working in the app, but aren't shared with the connected system
WhatsApp for Windows and Wear OS watches Not supported with this connection. Other linked devices, such as WhatsApp Web, keep working
Your contacts The names and numbers saved in your phone can also be shared with the connected system. Ask the provider what it keeps
Past chats When you connect, you can choose to share up to about six months of one-to-one chats with the system
App version Meta requires a recent version, so update first

Two of these rows deserve a closer look.

Sharing past chats. If you share them, Meta passes the system all your one-to-one chats from that period, personal ones included, not only customers. What happens next is up to the provider, so ask what it keeps, what it learns from, and what it ignores. Not sharing is a perfectly good choice: the system then starts from the day you connect.

Linked devices. If a partner or employee answers customers from WhatsApp on a Windows computer, they'll need WhatsApp Web or the phone instead. Replies typed on WhatsApp for Windows aren't passed on, so an assistant can't see that you've stepped in and may answer the same customer. Right after you connect, Meta signs out all your linked devices once, WhatsApp Web included. Link them again by scanning the QR code with your phone, as usual.

Who this setup isn't for

Connecting your app number works best when one or two people answer from their phones. It's a weaker fit if:

  • Several people answer the same number from different screens and need to assign chats to each other. A team inbox on its own platform number is built for that.
  • You rely on broadcast lists to send promotions. You can't create new ones once you connect, so you'd need another way to send those messages, within WhatsApp's rules on who you may contact.
  • Someone in the business depends on WhatsApp for Windows. They'll have to switch.

When you answer a customer yourself

This part depends on the assistant, not on Meta. Meta mirrors the messages you send from the app to the connected system, so a good assistant can see that you stepped into a conversation and leave it to you. Before you choose one, ask the provider to show you:

  • What it does after you reply to a customer from your phone: does it stay quiet in that chat, and can you decide for how long?
  • Whether you can get the first chance to answer, for example by having it wait a few minutes before it replies.
  • What it does with group chats and with personal messages on your number.
  • What happens to your customers' messages if the connection drops.

If the answers are vague, test it yourself before it answers your first customer.

Before you connect

  1. Update the WhatsApp Business app on your phone.
  2. Back up your chats (to your Google Account on Android or iCloud on iPhone), as before any change to your WhatsApp setup.
  3. Check linked devices. Move anyone on WhatsApp for Windows to WhatsApp Web.
  4. Check your broadcast lists, and decide how you'll send those messages afterwards.
  5. Decide about past chats, knowing that personal chats from that period are included.
  6. Write down what you want the assistant to handle, and what should always come to you: prices that change, complaints, unusual requests.
  7. Keep using the app. Meta disconnects the number from the platform automatically if the app on your main phone has no activity for about 14 days. A business that answers customers daily won't notice, but it matters before a long vacation without WhatsApp. If it happens, your WhatsApp Business app stays on your phone and you reconnect through your provider.

Also check how the provider connects. It should go through Meta's official sign-up flow, where you sign in with Facebook. A tool that asks you to scan a WhatsApp Web QR code into its system isn't using Meta's official connection. Our page on Answr's official Meta connection explains the difference. If you share the number with friends and family, see keeping personal and business chats apart on one number.

How Answr works with your Business app number

For eligible WhatsApp Business app numbers, Answr connects through Meta's official flow and works alongside the app. You keep using the app as before, apart from the changes above. When you reply to a customer yourself, Answr stops answering in that conversation for a while, and you choose how long. You can also have it wait before it replies, so you get the first chance. If you choose to share past chats when you connect, it reads up to about 100 recent customer chats (roughly the last two months) once to learn how you answer, and learns only from text messages. It's designed to skip personal chats, but that isn't a guarantee, so don't share past chats if that worries you. It doesn't answer anyone until you tell it to start.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my WhatsApp chats if I connect an assistant?

Meta's documentation describes your chats staying in the app on your phone and in sync with the connected system, and nothing in it says connecting deletes them. That still isn't a guarantee against data loss, so back up your chats first, as with any change to your WhatsApp setup. Sharing past chats with the connected system is a separate, optional choice.

Do I need a new phone number?

Not if Meta offers this connection for your number. Otherwise, ask the provider what alternatives are available before changing anything.

Can I still answer from WhatsApp Web?

Yes. WhatsApp for Windows and for Wear OS watches aren't supported with this connection, but other linked devices, including WhatsApp Web, keep working.

Is this available in my country?

We couldn't find a current list from Meta of the countries where it's available. The quickest way to find out is to start connecting with a provider: Meta's sign-up flow offers to connect your existing WhatsApp Business app number where it's available.

Can I disconnect later?

Yes. You disconnect from inside the WhatsApp Business app (Meta's documentation points to Settings > Account > Business Platform). Your WhatsApp Business app stays on your phone either way.
